Amanjiwo, Borobudur, Java, Indonesia
This stunning resort sits in the heart of Central Java overlooking the spectacular 8th century Buddhist sanctuary of Borobudur. Fashioned out of local limestone, the resort sits within a natural amphitheatre with the picturesque Menoreh Hills rising behind, the Kedu Plain in front and four volcanoes filling the horizon. Amanjiwo's suites and walkways offer breathtaking views of one of the world's most cultural and ancient historic sites.
For that special occasion book the Dalem Jiwo Suite, complete with personal butler. This exclusive retreat is set in a discrete enclosure complete with a private entrance, a classically styled rotunda and surrounding terrace with two separately walled bedrooms, each with stone steps descending to the suite’s private swimming pool and its two lounging bales. A 15m infinity pool finished in green Javanese stone is set back into the nearby rice fields. You can also choose from 36 luxurious suites designed in two deep crescent formations rimmed with high limestone walls, crawling with spider lilies and morning glory that curve into stone walkways that connect the suites with the pool club and main building. Interior decor includes a central four-pillar bed on a raised terrazzo platform, hand carved furniture, exotic Javanese textiles, antique glass paintings and a large sunken stone outdoor bathtub. Sliding glass doors lead from the terrazzo flooring and high ceilings of the suites onto a garden terrace with private swimming pool offering views of Borobudur or the surrounding rice fields.
Enjoy a range of Javanese and traditional beauty treatments including the ancient holistic jamu method of healing, performed either in the privacy of your suite or in the specially designed spa suite with twin massage tables and an outdoor bale for relaxing afterwards with a spicy ginger tea. Try the Mandi Lulur, the traditional Javanese preparation of a princess on the eve of her wedding. Facials, massages and cream baths, as well as a masculine version of Mandi Lulur are also available.
Relax in the 40m infinity swimming pool that is set into rice paddies below the resort, play tennis or go on an elephant safari. The resort can arrange various tours around Borobudur on foot, bicycle, horseback, by car or by andong (Java's horse-drawn carriage). Enjoy the silence of Borobudur at dawn followed by a panoramic picnic breakfast, hike into the Menoreh Hills for a bird's-eye view over the Kedu plains and Amanjiwo below, take a guided trek up volcanic Mount Merapi at midnight or experience a local market in the early morning.
Amanjiwo is situated at the base of the Menoreh Hills in the Kedu Plain of Central Java and is just 10 minutes from the Buddhist monument of Borobudur. The resort is an hour’s drive from Yogykarta Airport, which is serviced daily by flights from Jakarta or Bali (Denpasar).
