Highlights of Canada and New England
Cruising the harbours, waterways and fringes of the North Atlantic along the Canadian coastline is particularly delightful in autumn as the leaves change. But whenever you visit, you'll have the chance to taste fine hospitality in a beautiful part of the world.
A few of the highlights of cruising Canada:
- Docking in Quebec City – the only walled city north of Mexico – in the heart of French Canada, you're only a short stroll from the beguilling old town. This is a wonderland for visitors who can't quite believe they're in North America. It'sso European. Brushing up on your French before arriving is fun but anyone in the tourist trade here speaks English.
- Charlottetown is the tiny capital of Canada's Prince Edward Island – a quaint transposition of English village atmosphere and Canadian friendliness. The island was also the home of Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery whose fictional character, and book of the same name, Anne of Green Gables has stolen hearts across the world. The Green Gables farmhouse is a tourist attraction at Cavendish, about 45 minutes' drive from the port.
- Halifax has one of the world's largest natural harbours which provides a beautiful welcome to the British-founded city. The area's colourful history is examined in its Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, which includes artefacts from the Titanic. An old fort sits atop a hill overlooking the city, a remnant of the settlement's maritime military past, and a harbourfront boardwalk provides the opportunity for a pleasant stroll by historic buildings and modern shops and restaurants.
Temperatures in June to August are generally pleasant - around 70F/20c, but by Fall the temperatures have dropped to the mid fifties. Cruise Lines will usually recommend the appropriate clothing for these cruises.
