For the budget savvy

Whatever holiday type you’re looking for, there are plenty of budget-friendly experiences and accommodation options in Macau.

Experience one: Macau has a lot more to offer than just gambling and high-end shopping. If you’re looking to immerse yourself in Macau’s rich history and culture on a budget, the historic centre of Macau is a must-see.

It offers a blend of traditional Portuguese and Chinese buildings, temples, churches and pastel-coloured houses connected by cobblestoned walkways. Key attractions include the Ruins of St Paul’s and St Dominic’s Church.

The historic centre is also a favourite among foodies with small eateries scattered throughout the many alleyways; and don’t forget to try the famous Portuguese egg tarts (which are to die for).

The main expenses will be a small taxi fee, spending money, and any antiques that you may want to buy.

Experience two: ‘Casino hopping’ may sound dangerously expensive, but there is a way to enjoy the best of Macau nightlife on a budget. Most of the major casinos are close together and you can have an entire night out enjoying Macau without spending a penny.

Just like Vegas, you can spend hours walking around each casino, admiring the artwork, free entertainment and interior design.

I’d recommend checking out the Venetian Hotel for its incredible interior design, and entertainment that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into the heart of Venice.

I’d also suggest heading to the Wynn Hotel to check out the hourly show at its Performance Lake, as well as the Dragon of Fortune sculpture and show. And lastly, the Grand Lisboa Hotel is known for its elegance and free nightly entertainment.

Metropole Hotel Macau

Finding budget-friendly hotels anywhere in the world can seem almost impossible, however the Metropole has made this experience a reality. The hotel is highly recommended for those travelling with friends, as it’s centrally located and within walking distance to all the main attractions.

Hotel Sintra

This quality three-star hotel is perfect for the budget traveller. It is located minutes from the Grand Lisboa and provides free shuttles around the city. It’s ideal for couples and families looking to spend more on experiences than accommodation.

For the luxury lover

Those who appreciate a luxury travel experience will certainly find what they’re looking for (and more) in Macau.

Experience one: Known as a gambling mecca, you must roll the dice at one of Macau’s many casinos and integrated resorts. My favourite is the City of Dreams. It’s the largest Australian investment in Macau and includes the Hard Rock Hotel, the Grand Hyatt and our own export, Crown Towers.

It is centrally located, so it gives you easy access to most attractions in the Cotai area. This is one of the largest megaplexes of entertainment I have ever laid my eyes on. You could stay here for your entire visit to Macau.

Experience two: High-end dining is a must. The three-Michelin-starred Robuchon au Dome in the dome of the Grand Lisboa Hotel is a particular stand-out. With an haute-French menu and stunning views of Macau this is a once-in-a lifetime experience.

The Venetian Hotel »

There is an unusually wide range of luxurious accommodation to choose from in Macau. One that really stands out is the iconic Venetian Hotel. Like its US counterpart, it is a carbon copy, but newer and better.

The service is what you would expect, with all of your needs catered for with a dash of Asian hospitality.

Also, my clients tell me that the shopping there is fantastic with more than 650 brand names to choose from, as well as a theatre, restaurants and, of course, a massive casino on site.

Conrad Macao, Cotai Central

The Conrad properties are known for their warm, inviting entrances, along with decadent and opulent rooms. If your budget allows, try one of the luxury suites. The decor, benefits and views of these rooms are exceptional and it’s considered one of Asia’s most luxurious properties.
