Getting Around Cairns
Walking is the best way to explore central Cairns. Using the length of the Esplanade as a guide you can stroll from one end of town to another in about half an hour. It will take you a lot longer, of course, thanks to all the shops, markets, restaurants and bars along the way.
Cairns has made a big investment in cycle-way infrastructure. Sure, hire a bike to get from A to B – it’s a safe cycling city – but with a dedicated bike network there is plenty on offer for the recreational rider. For starters, you can ride on bike trails all the way from Cairns to Palm Cove. Northern Beaches bike hire offers a drop-off and pick-up service.
The public transport service in Cairns is run by Sunbus, with regular services from central Cairns to points north, west and south, including Palm Cove, Redlynch and Gordonvale. Fares are based on zones and tickets are available on board with payment in cash.
