Art lovers, museum enthusiasts and those just looking to dip their toes in the local art scene should make a beeline for the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Established in 1860, this ambitious museum has amassed an impressive collection of 41,000 works of art spanning from ancient times to present day. Make a day of exploring its four remarkable pavilions.

The museum has divided its permanent collections into six easy-to-navigate sections. Among these are the Archaeology and World Cultures collection; the Early to Modern International Art collection, which includes works from Goya, Cézanne, Rembrandt, Picasso, Rodin, Monet and Dali; and an excellent Quebec and Canadian Art collection that ranges from indigenous Inuit art to the vibrant canvases and sculptures of the 1970s. But that’s not all. Montreal’s celebrated museum also regularly hosts fantastic temporary exhibitions, displaying pieces by the likes of Warhol and Van Gogh.

Tiffany stained-glass windows adorn the museum’s on-site 444-seat concert pavilion, which puts on classical music performances – some tied to exhibitions within the museum, others focusing on a particular composer’s work – holiday concerts, puppet shows, dance recitals and more. You’ll also find the M Boutique and Bookstore here – well worth a browse – as well as a four-star-rated bistro that serves fresh, seasonal cuisine.

The museum is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 10am to 5pm. The major exhibitions stay open late – till 9pm – on Wednesdays. The museum is closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Two Metro stations are within walking distance of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. From Peel Station, take the Peel Street West exit, and from Guy-Concordia Station, exit onto Guy Street. For a change of pace after your museum visit, take a leisurely stroll or have a rest in Montreal’s pretty and much-loved Mount Royal Park, which is less than a 20-minute walk from the museum.
