Musee de la Civilisation – aka the Museum of Civilization – in Quebec City will enthral visitors even before they’ve stepped foot in the door. Its interesting architecture, interactive displays and prime location near the St. Lawrence River in historical Old Quebec make the museum one of the most popular and celebrated landmarks in the city.

Since opening in 1984 under the National Museums Act, the Musee de la Civilisation has made it a point of duty to educate about and inspire the people of Quebec (and the world) with the many cultural and social aspects of the occupants (both contemporary and historical) of the territory of Quebec.

This is achieved through the museum’s many interactive programs and exhibits that run every year. Visitors will be amazed by the architecture of the building. Designed by applauded architect Moshe Safdie, the museum’s airy Grand Hall, roof terraces, central courtyards and many exhibition rooms and auditoriums, alongside the cultural and urban backdrop of its location, make for a visual feast.

Known as ‘the museum of human adventure’ because of its strong focus on cultural Canada, the Musee houses a range of exhibitions from permanent displays to alternating explorations.

With topics as diverse as the exploration of extraterrestrials, the culture of Quebec’s Aboriginal people, the history of Radio Canada and the history of Canadian animation filmmakers, the Musee de la Civilisation continues to impress visitors with its diversity and constant tribute to the ancestors and origins of its nation.

The wide range of exhibitions and activities makes it a treat for both adults and children. The Youth Zone and family activities in particular are fun and educational adventures for the whole family. The museum is open year round from Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm. Ticket prices start at $5 for ages 12 to 16, $10 for students, $16 for adults and $15 for seniors. Admission is free for children under 11.
