Believe it or not, if it’s Ripley’s, then you know you’re in for an out-of-the-ordinary experience. So get ready to enter an incredible underwater world when you step inside Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada. Approximately 16,000 marine creatures call this place home – get to know some of them on your Toronto holiday.
With a focus on conservation, education and good old-fashioned fun, Ripley’s enchants visitors of all ages. The aquarium boasts the longest aquatic viewing tunnel in North America – it holds a whopping 5.7 million litres of water. And more than 100 interactive exhibits mean you’re not just watching the action – you’re part of it. For example, get hands-on with horseshoe crabs, rays and sharks in the ‘touch’ exhibits. Be sure to catch one of the live dive shows, too – they take place every two hours. You’ll see divers feeding stingrays in Ray Bay or learn about the 100 species of fish in Rainbow Reef from divers sharing information with visitors by microphone.
In all, nine aquatic galleries will transport you to various marine environments throughout the world. Dangerous Lagoon, the aquarium’s largest exhibit, is a highlight. Its moving walkway brings you up close and personal with the scary-looking sand tiger sharks, sandbar sharks, green sawfish and roughtail stingrays swimming above and around you. Or get to know the local marine life in the Canadian Waters gallery, which features, among others, creatures of the Great Lakes. Also, don’t miss Planet Jellies and the Discovery Centre.
Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada is open daily from 9am to 11pm (check the schedule for occasional early closures). It’s a good idea to set aside two to three hours for a proper visit. The aquarium is right in downtown Toronto, just steps away from the famous CN Tower. Why not tick them both off your must-see list? Union Station is the closest subway stop.
