Colourful coral and friendly fish will be your hosts at the Pulau Payar Marine Park, a pristine underwater attraction consisting of four uninhabited islands. Water-sport enthusiasts will love this deep-blue world, where swimming, snorkelling and scuba diving are all on the menu. Catch your breath between wet adventures on the floating platforms that punctuate this large water park.

Leave dry land behind at Pulau Payar Marine Park. Although four islands constitute the park, most of the best stuff to see is underwater. Slip into your swimmers and grab a well-fitting mask and snorkel before diving in.

Beneath the surface, you’ll swim with the likes of colourful fish, sharks and a number of endangered species of marine life. The Coral Garden is especially beautiful, with brilliant hues and alienlike formations. You’ll find the most gorgeous reefs along the south, east and west edges of the marine park. For a longer encounter, book a scuba tour.

Between swims, you can rest and sunbathe on the floating platforms. Or take a break from the warm sun under a gazebo. And because aquatic activities can work up a healthy appetite, there are several delightful spots boasting barbecue pits and picnic tables so you can refuel on a leisurely lunch.

Once you’ve swum to your heart’s content, you can still check out the marine wildlife at the underwater observation chamber that affords stunning views of the reef.

The Fisheries Department of Kedah protects the Pulau Payar Marine Park and its wildlife. Fishing is strictly prohibited, and the islands’ only inhabitants are of the nonhuman variety.

If you don’t visit the area with a tour group, you’ll need to talk to authorities, as visiting independently requires special permission. The marine park is 30 kilometres from Langkawi; hop on a speedboat or charter for the one-hour trip from Langkawi’s Kuah Jetty.
