The jungle at Telaga Tujuh is a hiker’s paradise. Step into a magical wonderland amid the trees and climb to the top of this stunning series of seven pools and waterfalls. Splash in the cool mountain water as you enjoy spectacular views of the island of Langkawi.

Telaga Tujuh, or ‘Seven Wells’, offers a refreshing and beautiful change of pace from frolicking in the ocean off Langkawi (not that we don’t love a bit of ocean frolicking). Fed by a mountain stream, this large waterfall makes seven stops, forming seven pools, as it cascades down through the dense island jungle outside Gunung Mat Cincang.

You’ll want to wear covered, sturdy footwear when visiting the falls, as your hike will indeed require some climbing – and hundreds of steep steps. There are some stops along the way, where you can catch your breath and snap a few photos.

Take advantage of them, as the water rushing over the rocks and the greenery-covered outcroppings are awe-inspiring. And the exceptional views you’ll find when you reach the top make the heart-pounding exercise well worth the effort.

Legend has it that fairies used to gather to bathe and play in this mystical setting, so make like the fairies and be sure to bring your swimmers. Watch your footing, as the rocks can get slippery. (Though the more adventurous may like to use the slick spots as makeshift slippery dips.)

The waters, however, are calm and have little current. A relaxing float is also a welcome respite from your trek up the steps. From the quiet of the water, look upwards to the treetops, and keep your eyes peeled for exotic animals. You’re likely to spot long-tailed macaques hanging around, and lucky birdwatchers might catch a glimpse of the hornbill with its bright orange beak.

You can get to Telaga Tujuh by taxi, bus or car (there’s plenty of parking available at the base). Entry to the falls is free, and you’ll find a visitor’s centre and several shops at the base.
